Maximizing Your 2-Hour Practice Session
Let’s be real: getting through a practice session without losing your cool can feel like a victory in itself! But with a solid plan in place, not only will you make it through, you’ll crush it. Here’s a breakdown of how to maximize every minute of a 2-hour practice session:

Practice Time: 10:00 AM to Noon
10:00 AM – 10:05 AM: Warm-Up (5 minutes)
Start with a stretching routine tailored to your style of dance. This should include stretches that directly benefit your choreography. Take this time to get both your body and mind in the right frame. A strong warm-up sets the tone for the session ahead and ensures you’re physically and mentally prepared. Don’t rush—this is a crucial step!
10:05 AM – 10:15 AM: Cold Round (10 minutes)
For this “cold round,” you’ll dance 4 or 5 full routines using actual competition audio. This includes music, the announcer’s voice, crowd reactions, and even the introduction of finalists before the final dance. It’s tough—dancing full out without stopping—but it’s essential. A cold round highlights your strengths and weaknesses, building your confidence. It also prepares you for unexpected situations, like being late to a competition and needing to jump straight into performance mode.
10:15 AM – 10:30 AM: Solo Review (15 minutes)
After the cold round, take a break from dancing with your partner. Spend this time reviewing your notes from previous coaching sessions. Focus on areas where you need improvement, whether that’s specific sections of your routine, footwork, turns, or timing issues. Work on the details you need to refine personally before rejoining your partner.
10:30 AM – 10:40 AM: Round Two (10 minutes)
Repeat the cold round setup. Use actual competition audio again, and this time focus on everything: the dance itself, transitions, your bow, your setup for the next dance, and the introduction before the final. Get into the habit of performing each component with the same level of commitment as you would in an actual competition.
10:40 AM – 10:50 AM: Review First Dance Together (10 minutes)
Now that you’ve done two rounds, it’s time to review the first dance. Analyze the consistent issues, whether it's connection, timing, balance, or posture. Approach this review with patience—be sure to communicate calmly. This is where many partnerships struggle. Instead of placing blame (“You’re pulling me too much!”), try rephrasing: “Let’s review this section to see if we can adjust positioning or timing.” You may discover the root of the issue lies in something you’re doing, not your partner.
10:50 AM – 10:52 AM: Full Dance (2 minutes)
After reviewing the first dance, perform it in full without stopping. If the issue is resolved—great! If not, that’s okay. Recognizing the problem is half the battle, and it will get better with time, further discussion, and coaching.
10:52 AM – 11:00 AM: Review Second Dance (8 minutes)
Now move on to your second dance. Follow the same review process as you did with the first one—analyze the issues with respect, and don’t be afraid to ask for a review of a specific pattern to understand what might need adjustment.
11:00 AM – 11:02 AM: Full Dance (2 minutes)
Perform your second dance full out. Don’t stop, no matter what.
11:02 AM – 11:10 AM: Review Third Dance (8 minutes)
Time to review the third dance. Continue to address the issues you identified with patience and respect, as you did with the previous dances.
11:10 AM – 11:12 AM: Full Dance (2 minutes)
Dance the third routine full out without stopping.
11:12 AM – 11:20 AM: Review Fourth Dance (8 minutes)
Now focus on your fourth dance. Identify any recurring issues, and use this time to troubleshoot and refine.
11:20 AM – 11:22 AM: Full Dance (2 minutes)
Perform your fourth dance full out. Stay in the flow.
11:22 AM – 11:30 AM: Review Final Dance (8 minutes)
Finish with the review of your final dance. Again, address any issues that came up and figure out how to improve them.
11:30 AM – 11:32 AM: Full Dance (2 minutes)
Perform your final dance full out. Push through the full routine and finish strong.
11:32 AM – 11:40 AM: Break (8 minutes)
Take a short break. Let your brain absorb everything you’ve just worked on, and rehydrate. Use this time to talk about upcoming competitions or just relax. Your body needs to recover, and your mind will be processing all the information from the session.
11:40 AM – Noon: Final 2 Rounds (20 minutes)
Now, it’s time for your final 2 full-out rounds. Dance all the routines back-to-back with minimal rest between them. Push your endurance and stamina, and work to keep your focus high.
Congratulations!
You’ve now completed a full-out practice session—no drama, no stress, just focus and hard work. By following this structure, you’ll build your endurance, fine-tune your dancing, and stay on the same page as your partner. Keep practicing, and you’ll notice huge improvements in both your technique and teamwork.
